Shuten Dōji is one of Japan’s most famous oni. Legends say he was once human. Excessive drinking and desire changed him into a demon. He ruled over Mount Ōe with terrifying power. Many demons followed his command. He kidnapped nobles and drank their blood like sake. Despite his cruelty, some tales show charm and wit. The warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu defeated him in the end. His name still symbolizes danger and temptation.
