Bakekujira are the souls of deceased whales that died while hunting. They appear as glowing, giant skeletons and behave like normal whales that surface for air. For those who spot a bakekujira, however, this is a bad omen, as the sighting brings the curse of the whales upon them and their place of residence. They bring famine, epidemics, fires and other disasters with them.
