“Tanuki” are very popular in Japan. Although there are a few mischievous “Tanukis” that want to harm people, most have a cheerful disposition. Like the “Kitsune”, “Tanukis” possess powerful magical abilities and can shape-shift. The most famous of their attributes, besides a sake bottle and a promissory bill, are probably their huge, malleable, magical testicles, which they can transform into useful things at will (weapons, drums, nets, rain gear, etc.). In the past, they took on the role of gods. Nowadays, however, they are mainly used as lucky symbols. In Japan, you can find “Tanuki” statues with the “8 good-luck things” on every corner. The “Tanuki” wears a big hat to protect against trouble, a big tail for balance and strength, big eyes to make good decisions, a nice smile, a promissory note to symbolize confidence, a big belly for serenity, huge testicles to symbolize financial luck, and last but not least a big sake bottle which actually stands for virtue – but maybe some of them just have a drinking problem.
